At the northern tip of an island in the Spree in central Mitte stands one of the great concentrations of museums anywhere in Europe. Museum Island brings together five institutions of the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin: the Altes Museum, the Neues Museum, the Alte Nationalgalerie, the Bode-Museum and the Pergamonmuseum. The ensemble was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list in 1999, recognised both for its architecture and for the way the buildings were conceived as a single cultural quarter.
Each museum has its own character. The Neues Museum is home to Egyptian collections, including the famous bust of Nefertiti; the Alte Nationalgalerie holds nineteenth-century painting and sculpture; the Bode-Museum is known for its sculpture collection and Byzantine art; and the Altes Museum presents classical antiquities. Together they can easily fill more than a single visit, and many people plan around one or two buildings at a time rather than attempting everything at once.
The most important practical point for 2026 visitors is that the Pergamonmuseum, long one of the most visited museums in Germany, is closed for a major, multi-year renovation. Parts of the museum are expected to reopen later this decade, but travellers hoping to see its famous architectural reconstructions should check the current status before planning a trip, as the closure affects a large share of the island's usual draw.
Getting there is simple. The island is walkable from Hackescher Markt and served by nearby S-Bahn and tram stops, and the Berlin Cathedral and the Lustgarten sit alongside it, making the area a natural place to spend an afternoon. Combined tickets covering several of the museums are available, which can be better value than single entries for anyone planning to see more than one collection.
Opening hours, ticketing and the latest information on the Pergamonmuseum renovation are published by the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin on their official website.
