Octox Labs operates out of a reinforced 1920s machine hall at Oranienstraße 182, near the Kottbusser Tor U-Bahn station. The company's co-founders, both former researchers at the Fraunhofer Heinrich Hertz Institute in neighboring Charlottenburg, spent four years developing a chip that uses a 'micro-ring resonator' to encode multiple wavelengths of light into a single fiber without the heat dissipation common in older designs. The result is a transceiver that fits into existing street cabinets and exchange buildings, like the large Deutsche Telekom hub at Mehringdamm 33, without requiring new cooling infrastructure.
Berlin's Technologiestiftung estimates that the city has roughly 12,000 public fiber cabinets for its 3.8 million residents. Many are already running near capacity due to the surge in home-office traffic since 2020. Octox's chip could upgrade these cabinets without digging up streets, a cost saving the startup pegs at roughly €18,000 per cabinet versus traditional upgrades.
The Numbers Behind the Hype
Octox closed a €22 million Series B in March, led by Berlin-based Earlybird and joined by the European Investment Bank. The company says its first production run of 50,000 chips, scheduled for August 2026, is already pre-sold to three internet service providers, one German, one Swedish and one based in Singapore. The listed retail price: €147 per unit, compared to €210 for equivalent 400G transceivers from Lumentum and II-VI. The startup claims its chip can handle 800G per wavelength by Q2 2027, which would match the top-end gear currently used in transatlantic cables.
The timing puts Berlin at the center of a connectivity crunch that is no longer theoretical. On July 10, the Strait of Hormuz closure sent bandwidth trading prices on the European fiber spot market up 12 percent in a single session, according to bandwidth-exchange platform Band-X. Data-center operators in Berlin, including the massive Euwax campus at Siemensstadt and the edge-facility cluster near Berlin Brandenburg Airport, have been calling Octox for weeks.
What happens next depends on manufacturing. Octox chips are fabbed at X-Fab in Erfurt, a 45-minute flight from Berlin's Tegel Airport. The company says it has secured capacity for 200,000 units in 2027. The real test: can it deliver on price and volume before the next storm or geopolitical closure tightens the screws further?
For Berliners, the practical advice is simple: if your home office relies on a VDSL or cable connection from Telekom, Vodafone or 1&1, you should expect to see fiber-to-the-premises offers from those incumbents within 18 months at lower monthly rates, Octox's chip is the reason. The startup is scheduled to present its second-generation design at the Broadband World Forum in Berlin on October 20, at the CityCube convention center near the Funkturm.
