Berlin Launches Smart City Roadmap: First Tech Deployments Begin 2027

Berlin city officials have published a fresh smart-city roadmap that lists specific products and infrastructure upgrades scheduled for rollout between 2027 and 2030, including AI-driven traffic signals and networked electric-vehicle chargers.
The document arrives as Berlin works to cut transport emissions by one-third before 2030 while handling rising energy demand from new housing estates and data centres. Planners say the timeline was moved forward after last winter’s grid strain showed that current systems cannot scale without new sensors and software.
Target neighbourhoods and partners
Work will begin along Oranienstrasse in Kreuzberg, where 180 roadside units will feed real-time data on air quality and delivery-vehicle flows into a central platform run by Berlin Partner für Wirtschaft und Technologie. A second pilot will cover the area around Potsdamer Platz, where Deutsche Telekom and the city’s waste-management company BSR will test underground bins fitted with fill-level sensors that trigger collection routes automatically. Both sites were chosen because they already host dense fibre connections installed during the 2024-2025 expansion.
The full programme carries a price tag of 85 million euros, with 40 million coming from the city budget and the rest from EU and federal grants. First hardware orders are due by December 2026, and the initial 50 traffic-light upgrades are set to go live in September 2027. City data shows current peak-hour delays at major junctions average 14 minutes; the new controllers are projected to cut that by 22 percent.
Next steps for residents and businesses
Anyone living or working in the pilot zones can register for early access to the mobility app on the city portal starting in January 2027. Businesses along the test corridors will receive letters in the coming weeks explaining how to connect their loading bays to the sensor network. Updates on tender results and installation schedules will appear monthly on the Senate’s digital-administration site.
