Berlin Expands Free Health Screenings for All Insured Residents
From heart check-ups to cancer screenings, Berlin offers insured residents a wide range of free preventive services. Here’s how to navigate them.
How we reported this
Berlin residents with statutory health insurance have access to a series of free preventive health screenings designed to catch diseases early. For those aged 35 and older, a general health check-up, known as the Check-up, is available every three years to detect heart disease, diabetes, and kidney issues. Adults aged 18 to 34 are entitled to one such check-up during that period. These screenings are covered by statutory insurance and can be booked with a general practitioner.
Cancer Screenings Covered by Insurance
Beyond the general check-up, the city’s health system provides cancer screenings at no cost. Residents aged 35 and older are eligible for a free biennial skin cancer screening. Women aged 20 and over can receive cervical cancer screening, while women between 50 and 69 are covered for mammography. Men aged 45 and older can access prostate cancer screening, and both men and women aged 50 and older are entitled to colon cancer screening. These services are outlined by Service Berlin and are available through participating doctors across the city.
Prevention Act and the Prevention Atlas
Germany’s Prevention Act (PrävG), passed in 2015, established a national framework for primary prevention. In Berlin, this has meant a focus on health promotion in schools, workplaces, and daycare centres. Over €500 million has been allocated to health-promoting services under this law. A practical tool for residents is the Prevention Atlas portal (praeventionsatlas.de), which lists more than 170 preventive health programs and over 300 providers across Berlin and Brandenburg. Categories include nutrition, exercise, stress management, and addiction prevention, making it easier to find local courses and workshops.
Additional Preventive Offerings and How to Access Them
Service Berlin also provides an official overview of other preventive services covered by statutory health insurance. These include vaccinations, dental check-ups (up to twice yearly), and various cancer screenings. Residents can visit service.berlin.de for a full listing. For personalised advice, consulting a family doctor is a good first step, many practices in neighbourhoods like Mitte, Kreuzberg, and Friedrichshain offer these check-ups. The online portal gesund.bund.de also provides reliable information on preventive care in English.
While this guide outlines what is available, individual health needs vary. It is always recommended to speak with a local medical professional before undergoing any screening or starting a new health regimen.
