Berlin on a Budget: Germany's Capital for Less

Berlin is the budget traveller's great European gift — a capital city whose combination of low costs, extraordinary cultural provision, and the particular energy of a city still reinventing itself makes it the most rewarding major European destination for visitors who don't want to spend London or Paris prices. The city's major museums are genuinely affordable (Museum Island combination ticket €22, individual museum entry €12–15), the BVG day ticket covers unlimited transport for €9.90, and the nightlife, parks, and street food scene provide world-class entertainment at developing-world prices.

Food in Berlin rewards those who eat as Berliners eat: a döner kebab from Mustafa's Gemüse Kebap (Kreuzberg) or any good Turkish shop costs €5–7 and constitutes a genuine meal; the Turkish Market on Maybachufer (Tuesday and Friday) provides fresh produce, olives, and cheese at prices that reflect actual Turkish supply economics; and the Vietnamese and Korean restaurants of Prenzlauer Berg and Neukölln serve substantial meals for €8–12. Supermarket chain Rewe and Lidl's prepared food sections provide excellent picnic supplies for Tempelhofer Feld or Volkspark Friedrichshain.

Accommodation: Berlin's hostel scene is genuinely excellent — the Generator, St Christopher's, and dozens of independent hostels offer dormitory beds from €15–25 and private rooms from €45–65 in well-located neighbourhoods. Airbnb remains viable in outer districts despite tightening regulations. A Berlin week budgeted at €70–100/day per person covers accommodation, food, transport, and most cultural activities — making it Europe's best-value major capital for independent travellers.
