Berlin Museums Guide: Museum Island and the City's Art Scene

Berlin's museum landscape is among the richest in Europe — a city that emerged from Cold War division with the paradoxical inheritance of two complete museum systems (East and West) that have been progressively integrated into the largest museum concentration in Germany. Museum Island, the northern tip of the Spree island in the city centre, contains five UNESCO World Heritage museums in a single complex that rivals the Vatican Museums or the Louvre in ambition and significance.

The Pergamon Museum is Museum Island's centrepiece — housing the reconstructed Pergamon Altar, the Market Gate of Miletus, and the Ishtar Gate and Processional Way of Babylon in galleries of monumental scale that allow visitors to walk through ancient architecture at original size. The Pergamon is currently partially closed for renovation (until 2027), with the altar itself inaccessible, but the Babylonian and Islamic art collections remain open and extraordinary in their own right.

The Bode Museum at the island's northern tip holds the most refined collection — Byzantine art, European sculpture from the medieval period through the 18th century, and the numismatic collection that is the largest in Europe. Entry to all five Museum Island institutions is covered by a single Museum Island ticket that represents extraordinary value for the depth of cultural engagement it provides. Thursday evenings offer extended 10pm closing at reduced admission.
